The Green Dragon is located in the
rural idyll that is Flaunden, a
picturesque village on the Chiltern
Hills where south-west Hertfordshire
meets Buckinghamshire. You will
find Flaunden deep within a triangle
formed by Chesham, Hemel
Hempstead and Watford. And, as
centuries-old tradition dictates, you’ll find The Dragon - as it is
affectionately known locally - virtually adjacent to the village Church of
St Mary Magdaline.
Flaunden has long been a
centre of choice for walkers.
For here on the Hertforshire-
Buckingham border is
stunning, robust walking
country.
Importantly, too, the Green
Dragon is where both lone
walkers and larger groups
invariably pause, rest,
refresh, and reflect; and to
which they invariably return -
either that day, or on their
next visit. And many will be
accompanied by their dogs -
if well behaved, always
welcome at The Dragon.
As one incredulous American tourist
remarked "Look at this place. You've got a
dart board, four different board-games,
card-games, dominoes and some weird
thing with a wooden box and a bunch of
little sticks, not to mention old-fashioned
eccentricities such as Aunt Sally, wellie-
throwing, shove ha'penny, marrowdangling,
and conger-cuddling. You call this a bar? At
home we'd call it a kindergarten!"

The same is said of the beleaguered, increasingly elusive, equally fabled
traditional English country pub - along with the local church, epicentre of village
life for 1,000 years and more.
For like the dragons of myth and legend, the traditional pub is constantly
rumoured to be fading gradually into the mists of time.
Yet legend and reality can still be found co-existing very happily indeed!
